Library Receives $50,000 Tocker Foundation Grant

The Fayette Public Library, based in La Grange, is about to go through a once in a lifetime transformation.  As a recipient of a $50,000 grant from the Tocker Foundation, the library will be able to re-imagine its current floor plan.

The grant funds will be used to add interactive furniture in the children’s room, create a space for teens, add new flexible meeting room furniture, and replace shelving.

The Tocker Foundation promotes Texas public libraries in communities of 12,000 or less. Grant funds from the Tocker Foundation, financial support from the City of La Grange, and individual financial donations will allow the library to completely redesign the indoor space.

Part of the grant process requires applicants to meet with a library design consultant. The consultant, along with the Tocker Foundation, presents reimaged floor plans and furniture options. Along with the re-imagined youth spaces, the reference desk and public computer area will also change to offer more privacy and create more space. The library expects the project will take about a year. “It is amazing what can be done by simply repositioning shelving and adding different furniture options. Working with an experienced consultant really allowed staff to visualize possibilities we would have never dreamed of,” said Allison MacKenzie, Library Director.

Since 1998, the Tocker Foundation has awarded over $130,000 in grant funds to the Fayette Public Library. Most recently, in 2016, the Foundation provided over $36,000 to digitize local historic newspapers. The local newspapers were digitized by the University of North Texas and are hosted on the Portal to Texas History. “The Tocker Foundation has long supported our library and we are very grateful to offer our community this gift. We look forward to creating a space that truly reflects the vibrant community we serve,” said MacKenzie.
